Grown

My final project for my last term in ceramics at the University of Oregon, these works explore the relationship between the body and the environment.

I am interested in the idea that nature, or the natural processes and cycles of the world have a hand in creating historical artwork, and add to and alter its meaning. Many pieces of pottery in museums are significant only with the addition of time and wear. Cups, plates, pots and amphora were everyday objects, transformed by time and nature. I looked at examples of amphora from the Mycenean, ancient Greece, for my color palette and form. In doing so, I  want to conjure mental landscapes surrounding the gooey things that creep and crawl on the forest floor, or the strange creatures that live on the seafloor. If they had voices and hands, were able to shape clay with their strange appendages, what art work would they make?
